Who are they?
Panthera uncia
Weight : 35 to 55 kg
Lifespan : 18 years
Gestation : 98 to 104 days
Distribution : Central Asia
The snow leopard, also known as the ounce, is perfectly adapted to cold, steep mountain environments. Its long, thick tail helps it maintain balance and provides protection from the cold. Extremely discreet and exceptionally well camouflaged, it is often referred to as the “ghost of the mountains.” An endangered species, its survival now depends on ongoing protection and conservation efforts.
Puma concolor
Weight : 35 to 100 kg
Lifespan : 20 years
Gestation : 82 to 96 days
Distribution : North, Central and South America
The cougar is a solitary and agile feline. A remarkably adaptable species, it inhabits a wide range of environments across the Americas. With powerful, well-developed muscles, it is perfectly suited for ambush hunting and can leap nearly 12 meters in a single bound. Although the species is doing well globally, the cougar has disappeared from certain regions, including Quebec.
Panthera leo
Weight : 120 to 200 kg
Lifespan : 20 years
Gestation : 100 to 120 days
Distribution : Africa
The lion is one of the most iconic big cats of the African savanna. Powerful and easily recognized by the male’s mane, it is the only big cat that lives in social groups known as prides. This collective lifestyle supports cooperative hunting, cub protection, and territory defense. Now an endangered species, the lion’s survival depends on the protection of its habitats and coexistence with human populations.
Lynx canadensis
Weight : 6 to 17 kg
Lifespan : 20 years
Gestation : 63 to 70 days
Distribution : Canada
A discreet and agile predator, the Canada lynx has large paws that act like snowshoes. It moves with ease over snow to hunt its favorite prey: the snowshoe hare. It can consume up to 200 per year!
By hunting hares, the lynx prevents them from over-grazing vegetation. Its presence indicates that the boreal forest is rich and healthy.
